Quiet friendly neighbors. Resident Caretaker does work maintaining and cleaning inside and out though most of it is done by others under contract. His erratic behaviour and moods
have often caused anxiety and stress to those he attempts to intimidate. Many Residents avoid him. His chain smoking and wife's abusive alcohol driven confrontations are frequent.
Gym area and equipment rarely used. Security system adequate but archaic. Flags in front finally replaced after 5 years being ripped, dirt

y, and faded badly. Property Managers in head office need inter-personal skill training. Very adversarial, arbitrarily pre-judgemental culture. Racism is evident as is treatment of minority's.

They are all over the place. Some people have bug and no bites because they have pets (cats and dogs.) Bed bugs really like cats and dogs. as much as they like us. The pets are home more than the tenants. And don't move much. They are prime targets for hungry bedbugs. The dogs also get bitten. When nobody is there. And the owners have no bites. You can't check the pets cause they dont't show bites or scratches. And tick chemicals or a flea baths have no effect on bedbugs.. Wrong chemicals. They

need to stop taking in pets. MORE PETS EQUALS MORE BED BUGS.

January 30, 2016
Had bed bugs when I first moved in 2012. Sprayed several times since and no further bugs. Agree with other comments that smokers who look like they belong in institutions do live here but there is a no smoking policy now and smokers are no longer permitted to move in. Regular checks for bedbugs are caused by these type of smokers and once they are gone (lots have left with new policy)the place should improve immensely!! Suites are being beautifully rehabbed! The elevator is

repaired regularly and Brydges has made some personnel changes. The downtown location is within minutes of at least 10 buses and just a short walk to downtown and Osborne Village for those who don't have smoking and other addictions and can still walk. Hopefully a tenant panel will be formed to assist with choosing people to live in the place rather than leaving it up to whoever has allowed so many smokers into the place. Hopefully that is over!!

BEDBUG UPDATE NOV/DEC, 2015

During the months of November and December of
2015, at least 6 units were sprayed. The problem
continues. Presumably, bedbug infested pets are
re-infesting apartments. And numerous overnight
visitors are re-infesting sprayed units.

I'll say that the elevator is dangerous!
There isn't even an elevator permit.
This means it hasn't been inspected in years!

Ridiculously overpriced.

Many problems.

example. Poulins is here every month...bugs.

example Elevator is dangerous, noisy and
breaks down all the time. Need a new one.
A potential lawsuit.

the good:

no bugs in my apartment

the bad:

lots of dogs kept by psychiatric patients and that means fless and doggy poop all around neighborhood

Stay away from Brydges Property "management" . They are horrible, they never answer phone calls or never call back when needed. They are full of bad habits and do not do the things that they are required to do. This particular building has a new "resident manager" as the previous was fired for doing her job, go figure, it is being looked after by the head condo board member's mother and girlfriend, place is filthy and they do not speak Englis

h. One must themselves in this place as there are a ton criminals and pot heads, place reeks of weed and drunks are coming in and out at all hours making noise and thus having the police out constantly. Back lane parking lot is constantly a problem with bums and lowlifes playing in the trash and recycling bins, and can you believe Brydges and resident manager condone this and see no danger or think it is wrong. Certain "owners" have been seen jumping in the bins and taking in disgusting old trash into their units.
This is NOT the kind of place you want to spend big money on, condo board here as well is clueless and is very self serving, they try to pull off anything that works in their favour. STAY AWAY

see full report...

POSITIVES:

The bed bug policy seems to be working. They do check
the units every few months. Tenants must cooperate.
Less poison is used since it is caught early.

Other positive is that rent is only 660 for suite and a parking
spot. Good price.

NEGATIVES:

The place is noisy from all sorts of ambient sounds. Walls
are very thin. Bring earplugs. It could be easily solved if
management would soundproof one room per unit...the
bedrooms being ideal. Then there would be a "refuge"

from
that rumbly old elevator.

Other negative is that half the people smoke. Halls always
have a bit of smoke smell. Not good. Even the janitor smokes
out back. Whenver I get my car, there he is puffing away.
Not good. Need zero tolerance on smoking. Since rent
controls don't apply in this Manitoba Housing subsidized
building, they should just increase the rent for all smoking
tenants. With 6 months notice and a rent increase of 200 bucks,
I am sure the smokers would want to leave. They can say they
the need the cash for all the smoking related expenses.

We were never informed about this ongoing problem prior to moving in. The piles of furniture out back should have been a hint. We are upset that something of this magnitude was left out of our conversations with management. In addition, the inspections of our unit are an uncomfortable event
since Poulin's employees are looking at our personal items. Also, the tall skinny caretaker also walked into our apartment as if to spy on our personal activities. Truly uncalled for and truly uncomfortable.

Had we been informed prior to our lease, we would not have entered into an
agreement with this questionable enterprise.

Brydges property management has always liked the quick money and the chances of making this into high priced condones one day

Since July, 2012, my apartment at 224 Colony has been sprayed by Poulin's 6 times, as well as all other apartments in the building. This is very expensive but necessary. Without a full spraying of the building, the bugs return. I am bug free.
I agree with other comments, the management of this building has been deplorable. The managers have only allowed smokers who belong in mental health and other supportive facilities to move into this place. From what I have been advised, site managers

obviously wanted other like minded people to live here. In addition, the air exchange for the building is very old and weak and cannot accommodate all of the smoke that permeates the hallways and apartments. There does seem to be some improvement, but the spirit and life the the place is very damaged. Why is a non-profit government sponsored building operating like this??

Brydges Property management and Brenda Brydges went above and beyond to take care of all the tenants at 224 Colony Street. During the bedbug treatment. They rented a bus to take all the tenants to a safe place to stay during the treatment. They had coffee and donuts waiting for us. They then rented a bus to take us back and because we had to wait before we could go into our homes Brydges had sandwiches and drinks for us while we waited. I can see this place...
Down the street........

Still lots of bedbugs...
Still lots of furniture infested and otherwise
out back.
Still lots of poisonous Poulin's vans driving
up to poison I mean spray the place.

Still managed by Brydges Property Management and run by Brenda Brydges...

And it is going on now towards ELEVEN years!

Nein / 11!

Still tons of old rotting furniture out back. I dont live here but I can see the mess from a distance. brenda brydges property managment must be either lazy or dont know how to do job. i even saw more people taking the stuff and then of course it gets spread to the other apartments and the bugs keep geettting stronger and pervasiver. on free give away day some people took stuff home too. why is this. all that brenda brydges property management inc has to do is get some guys to pick up the crap f

or 20 or 20 bucks. I think the city does it for a few shekels. seems to be the only place in this back lane where there is always crap couches beds out back.

good sign that there are bugs and that the bugs are winning if you always see some sort of furniture chairs and stuff sittin there. worse yet people grab the stuff and spread the problems all over da frickin place

I do not understand the policy of kirsten bishop brenda brydges property management. There is a HIGH DEMAND for bed bug free and smoking free apartments in the inner city of Winnipeg. If they put into effect just these two measures, they would have a waiting list 10 people long. Heck, they might even be able to raise rent by another hundred. Plus we know that second hand smoke is bad....so why do they not act on such a logical profitable ideas?

Still a dump. Again it's the people allowed into the building that are the primary problem and that is due to incompetent management. If your prospective tenant looks like the belong in a mental ward, a jail, or a shelter or streetcorner on Main, then that's where they should be. These bozos seem to have no problems allowing drunks or criminals into this supposed seniors building but they are evicting my dying disabled mother because she has a quiet clean small cat. I guess you can't expect much

intelligence or rationale from a management company who hires a thief as their caretaker or expects tenants to pay for their own bed bug treatments when said bugs are coming from common areas and other suites. Kirsten Bishop is a real winner I see. Every tenant should demand the building be gutted and sprayed, and anyone who disagrees is likely part of the problem and should be placed in the proper facility. Bridges is taking severely mentally I'll tenants, addicts, and criminals into this building and an investigation should be launched into how they are running this building. First things first, a seniors building such as above should be SMOKE FREE. Before the start taking small clean quiet cats from seniors they should deal with the scum, poor management, bugs, and smoke first. Just a tip. Also, it's called a pre-rental or pre-employment criminal record check. Note to Brydges, you should try it some time.

P:P.O.S.T. ( aka Poisoned : Pissed Off Skip Tracer ). Miss Kirsten Bishop states that they use Poulin's for the bed bug pest control. Many of the workers lack adequate training. Bed bugs might be preferable to being Poisoned by Poulin's. Back in 1997, the Winnipeg Free Press (February 9, 11 and April 24, 1997) reported on Poulin's breach of the Worplace Safety and Health Act and they were fined $5,500.00. Workers were exposed and one of these workers became seriously ill. Their primary concern w

as to avoid bad publicity. Even the judge was pissed off. Then, in 2002, they were fined again for $4,000.00 but this latter time by the feds..Winnipeg Free Press (August 23, 2002). In each case, they were releasing toxic poisons. Just last year, the Vancouver branch of Poulin's was fined $6,000.00 by Environment Canada. The inadequately trained workers did it again but now they were foolin' with an entirely different area of the law. All of this is a matter of public record. Maybe you guys should just live with itchy scratchy buggies since the alternative is much scarier.

Poisoned by Poulin's-no foolin!!!

At times this place was like grand central station. No matter how many tips you give here, that that makes effective eradication and maintenance of a bed bug free apartment difficult. People would be visiting from up north and the whole family and gang would sleep there. Others brought in street people to stay now and then. Children would be staying over with family.
What are little girls and boys doing in a seniors residence? Some questionable types would bring home dates from the Main Street

strip...sex? or good friends? either way, more fuel the bed bugs..maybe bed bug porn...whatever...anyway lots of these people would then leave the doors to their respective apartments open and out would crawl the little buggies...heck, there was even one dude who had bugs crawling on him...eewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Brenda Brydges Bed Bug Building.

This place is a dump. Period. It was intended to be cost effective seniors housing however it is now dominated by rif raf, the mentally incompetent, those needing to be institutionalized, and of course bed bugs. Management needs to cut the welfare suites, kick out the bums, gut the place and start over with new renters and a higher rent. Or convert to condos, if you can convince buyers that this area is improving. There is no way this building can survive and stay profitable unless some combo of

the above is taken. The suits haven't been updated in 30 years and the bug issue is disgusting. The best way to get rid of the types who hoard and invite bed bugs into the building is to convert it to condos, since socialist Manitoba unfortunately has rent control. Bridges should do a mandatory spraying for ALL suites. If a tenant says no that's a great sign as to why they shouldn't be allowed to be renting in the first place. Either gut this building or bulldoze it.

I found bedbugregistry to be a very very valuable website in my apartment hunt. And no I did not get paid for this. On moving on from 224 Colony Street I really wanted to get some sort of information or at least a general heads up if there were any problems at such and such an address. I tried to use the local papers such as the Winnipeg Free Press and other sources like websites such as hometrader and acerenting which are good for finding places but for various and sundry reasons simply can not

tell you such information. This website gave me a heads up that I needed. Granted some postings are suspect but it is a good starting point so that you can then ask people. Thanks Bedbugregistry!!!!

I think it's all the cats and dogs in that place. Bedbugs can live off of other animals" blood. Or maybe it is all those hairy old men and their mustaches, beards and way past shoulder length hair. figure all sorts of critters and bugs and ticks and lice are living on them ...lol..

Yes there were lots of bed bugs when I was there. But there a problems associated with 224 Colony far worse than a few little buggies. When I lived here Bridges Prop Mgmt ran the building. It has social housing for 25% of the suites and the rest are market rent. The building and common areas are not well maintained and for the most part are dirty most of the time. Getting anything fixed takes forever. The compressor on my fridge broke and it took them a week to get it fixed. Not acceptable under

any circumstances. The building is in a bad neighborhood. There are many rooming houses, crack houses and other social problems in the area. It is not safe to sit outside after 6pm in the summertime because of the rift raft that congregate outside the building on the street So a few bed bugs are nothing compared to the other issues.

see full report...

The really big problem with this place is that some of the tenants like to dumpster dive or garbage pick. So you know they get some stuff and they drag it back into the building. Who knows what kind of germs and bugs are on all that crap that they drag back into the place.

I had to leave this place because of the bugs. Ants mice and bed bugs. That bishop person said that site manager has traps and stuff. That would a been ok if he was there. They only paid the guy for 10 or twenty hours a week and then he would nt answer the door once he did his shift. Would just tell us go call bridges. It took me a long time to get traps and then it took long time for spraying and still didnt work out. I left . forget about this place.

Quite unsurprised to see this address on here. As a former PCO worker employed at one time by Orkins, we did regular work here about 4 years back. Much to my amusement, management did not seem willing to spray adjacent units to an infestation. Unfortunately, that pretty much guarantees a further significant spread of bedbugs. Regular visits were required and the problem clearly has gotten worse and has persisted. This was in our TOP TEN of regulare customers. One further point in response to Mis

s Bishop's comment below, glue traps are not that effective for bed bugs whereas they are good for pests such as cockroaches for which one can use an attractant. Bed bugs are NOT attracted to glue traps so it is just happenstance if one is caught...Good Luck...I would strongly recommend against moving in here until they have a serious progam.

So, nice to see that the property management company finally admits publicly that they have a serious bed bug problem after more than 4 years. And for some reason they still can not resolve it. Glad I left 5 years back. If you are thinking of moving in here, remember this and note that you will be expected to pay over 600 dollars for a bed bug infested unit in a dangerous part of the inner city...think "tip of the iceberg".

Brydges Property Management works with Poulins Pest Control. Brydges Property Management responds to all reports of bedbugs at 224 Colony and initial treatment and follow ups are completed promptly. If there are ongoing complaints about untreated bedbugs it is because they have not been reported to the Brydges' office. Bed bug traps are available from the Site Manager at any time. All reports are taken very seriously and responded to in a timely manner. Effective treatment of bedbugs requir

es diligence on the part of the management company as well as the resident. Without the full participation of both parties, treatment may not be effective.

This is the WORST place for bed bugs that I have ever livde in.they had them for 5 years.at least. only thing I could do was to move out and say b ye bye all your stuff will be full of bugs and they make you throwo out beds too..Enter at YOUR OWN RISK..and get ready to lose all of your stuff because next plasce dont watn people form bed bug place

Horrible...they are here all over place. they should give this building a new name like
Bed Bug Haven

Bed bugs are everywhere. All floors!. The property manager do little. They spray little bit. Then bugs come back again. Bed bugs are here for over a year. A whole year and still they not fix problem. Getting worse every month.

The bed bugs keep returning..To this date, there have been infestations on the second floor, third floor, fifth floor, and sixth floor. The management sprays but then they come back. Further, the follow up spraying is always done rather late..which means the surviving eggs can hatch and start an entire new round of infestations..The management company does spray but appears to be hesitant to do it thoroughly enough to eliminate the bugs once and for all!
