My boyfriend and I checked in to the Fairfield Inn the evening of October 8th, 2011. The room appeared to be clean and otherwise "bedbug free" after our routine inspection, and we settled in. I woke early in the morning, COVERED in itchy red welts. We pulled back the sheets, and there it was, one bedbug, attempting to escape.
After I killed it, I showed it to the front desk as evidence in support of a full refund. Amazingly, they were not able to provide one until the following day (the mana
ger was absent). Although I understand that this was a policy of the hotel, it seems to me that a bed bug infestation is rather an emergency situation, for the sake of the business. Eventually, they did provide a full refund (the next day), but their lack of outrage, initiative, and apologetic sentiment toward the situation makes it seem as if mine was a common complaint in that establishment.
As I was the only person in the room who was bitten (my boyfriend escaped without a mark), I imagine this is a new, or hopefully not very widespread infestation. In any case, do not let the low rates of the Fairfield Inn tempt you!
