I checked into this La Quinta Inn on Dec. 2, 2013, and was assigned first to room 166. It was a non-smoking room and someone had clearly smoked in there. The nice desk clerk reassigned me to room 156. I've never had a bedbug experience at La Quinta, where I always stay because they are so dog friendly. I have a friend who had a bedbug problem at her condo, so I'm very educated and able to look for signs of bedbugs. The first thing I checked was the mattress and didn't see any problem initially.

I always put my suitcases and other travel items on a suitcase stand or dresser top, never near or on the bed. When I was hopping into bed at 11:30 pm, I noticed two bedbugs when I pulled back the sheets. Freaked out, I grabbed a ziplock bag and put one in the bag and ran to the front office. The clerk there was nonreactive and seemed a little put out, but he reassigned me to room 163 and said, "I'll only relocate you this once." I returned to the room and packed up my things and my dog and headed to the new room. Once there, I checked the mattress in the room and found bedbug skid marks on the mattress. By this time, I was so stressed that I would not take a chance on the room. I immediately checked out. The front desk clerk offered no apology or compensation. I will report this incident to La Quinta as a Returns member and to this hotel's manager, Mike Patel, 602-956-6500 x 402.
