For the longest time we had no idea what was making my roommate itchy. Then huge red welts started to appear all over her body. She went to the doctor who thought she might be getting hives from some sort of allergic reaction. Nope. Finally they became so numerous that we saw them: bed bugs, without a doubt! We had brought our own furniture into the apartment but they must have been hiding in the floor boards as neither of us had had any problems whatsoever at our previous residences. When we informed the landlord about things, complaining many many times, they told us "bed bugs are brought into the apartment" and were the responsibility of the tenant. In New York City, at least, THIS IS NOT TRUE. IT IS THE LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY OF THE LANDLORD TO PAY FOR THE EXTERMINATION OF BED BUGS.

Anyway. Even with this knowledge the labdlord still ignoored us, so we hired an exterminator and will be taking the cost out of the rent.
