Unfortunately it's not just the 5th floor. We live on the first/ground floor and also recently discovered bedbugs (physically found them in the bed). We did not get bites for months after we moved in, but eventually got them steady enough to check. We found a few in our bed, captured them and killed them. We have been doing weekly checks and usually find about 5 every few weeks and kill them. We haven't been bitten too much, but we are buying a new frame (metal, not wood for them to hide in) and an encasement for the mattress. [we are sure the bedbugs are from this apartment, we did NOT have them previously for sure].
Since I had read that fumigations were virtually worthless (from this site), we have not told the landlord/super, as we are sure they will simply exacerbate the situation (they do not try to fix things permanently, just temporarily. Our bathroom ceiling fell in and they instantly fixed it, but we can tell they didn't actually fix the water problem that caused it in the first place). I have read on many sites that fumigations just spread them.
I plan to have the place treated right before we leave, and am hoping to find a place I trust and try to get the landlord to pay for that.

Wow. I wish I would have read this a YEAR ago before I signed the lease on apt. 56. My roommate and I have been suffering with "hives" for a year. A YEAR. and just recently discovered after pulling bugs off os our bodies in the middle of the night that they were not hives but indeed bed bug bites. The posting from Tim in Aug 08 was LITERALLY made the DAY I moved in.... Obviously this apt. has been infested since I got there and I don't see how the problem will be solved any time soon as they are using the same exterminator. Be smart about your decision to move in!!!

hey y'all - i was ryan's roommate (she moved out a while back). i just wanted to let people know that, almost a year later, despite lots of "fumigations," we still very much have bedbugs here in the apartment. we are all leaving (myself and my 3 roommates) at the end of this month and they are saying that they're going to fumigate while we're gone and not rent out our apt. for at least a month. we are apt. 58. i know that apt. 56 also had a bed bug problem - i think that's the apt. ryan was talking about.

it could very well be that with all of us gone they can finally get rid of them for good. i know #56 is or was completely vacated as well, as of a couple months ago.

just wanted to put it out there so that people can make informed decisions.

About a month ago, August 2007, I saw a neighbor sitting out in the hallway with her very large dog. I asked her if she was locked out and she replied, that no she was being fumigated. When I said, "we have cockroaches to, how did you get the landlord to pay for fumigation?" She replied, "nope - its bed bugs. and she got the landlord to pay because she was insistent that the apartment was infested.

Sure enough, a month later I start to get bites on my arms. Ifigured it out today - I have bed bugs. I found them on the walls near my bed, behind picture frames on the wall. Thankfully I saw bedbugger.com and I will stop mangling them up in tissue and throwing them away. I live on the 5th floor of 555 W151st Street on the corner of Broadway.
