I have lived in this building for several years and just recently started getting bites. I have contacted the building manager who says they no longer spray for pests. She recommended that I call an exterminator and take it out of my rent.

So I called the exterminator this morning and they sent someone out straight away. Within 10 minutes, he had found a bedbug in my mattress. He gave me three hours to pack up my closet and dresser in black plastic bags and empty out the night stands and the desk in my bedroom. Then, he came back with his arsenal of chemical weapons. He used steam to clean my mattress and kill the eggs. He used acid behind the light switches and electrical outlets and he used some sort of liquid chemical on the floors, windowsills, and furniture. I spent hours in the laundry room putting all my clothes in the dryer for an hour at a time. I ruined my drapes in the washing machine but I don't care. All I want is to be rid of those little bastards. This has been a totally disgusting experience. I feel like I got an STD or something. I hope this works!

p.s. I'm deducting the fee from my rent.

This is in response to M.M. and others living at 601 O'Farrell. Please know that it is illegal for your landlord to force you to pay for a pest-control operator (PCO).

According to the SF city housing code, it is the landlord's responsibility to keep his/her building free of pests and other vermin, not yours. The landlord is legally required to contract with a PCO within 24 hours of a tenant's complaint of bedbugs and to have a PCO come to treat within 72 hours, and the landlord must pay for the service him/herself. I encourage you to tell your landlord this information.

From 2 weeks ago, I caught on my skins many red spots that has biting mark & swells, spreads like welts. I assume that this is bedbug bites, since I've heard some news articles & webpages recently, and the same things are happening to my friends in neighborhood. To mate it worse, our building manager says that they stopped free pest control service - now 80$ to get the service by calling in person.

This is the building at 601 O'Farrell st (the South-West corner at O'Farrell-Leavenworth)
